A 95 Year Legacy

In 1925, George M. Johnson crossed the Delaware by ferryboat from Philadelphia, PA to Camden, NJ where he started prayer meetings in the home of Sis. Ward. After three years of faithful, consistent prayer, a church was born. Morningstar Church was established. It's first location as a church was at 2nd & Pine Street.

Elder George Johnson labored in the work of the Lord. Many souls came to Christ, were fed the Bread of Life and the church of God flourished. For 33 years, Elder Johnson who ultimately became Bishop Johnson, pastored the flock diligently. As he was led, he led.

Morningstar became the first church in the city of Camden, NJ to preach & teach the fullness of the gospel through the Apostolic Doctrine. There are many churches today In this city propagating the Faith which was once delivered to the saints, both Spanish and American as a result of the great and voluntary sacrifice of this man and his family. After Bishop Johnson went home with the Lord, the church was pastored by his wife, Sis. Alma Johnson, and followed by Elder David Dupree, Elder Amos Mitchell, and Bishop James C. Brewer.

Elder James C. Brewer came to MPC in June of 1976 and labored in the Kingdom. He was charged not to let the Mother Church go down. And he did not! Under his leadership, Bishop Brewer relocated Morningstar to its current location at 1464 South 9th Street, Camden, NJ. He was a dynamic teacher, a prolific preacher and had a heart for people, especially young people. God sent him help in the person of the late Elder Derrick E. Carter, Asst. Pastor. Together, they worked to advance the Kingdom. They taught the Word of God, counseled many and raised up a ministerial staff. It wasn’t always easy, but they continued as God gave them strength. Many souls were touched, healed, delivered, and saved.

As Bishop Brewer prepared to go to his heavenly home, he charged us “KEEP FIGHTING” AND DON’T STAY STUCK- to keep moving, keep advancing, keep progressing. With the help and strength of the Lord, the LEGACY CONTINUES- MPC – 95 years strong!
